Creative Studies Gallery

For my Advanced Creative Studies class, we were provided with a syllabus of project prompts, and challenged to explore them with intention.

The Head

"Using wire or flexible rod, describe a three-dimensional organic form such as a head or hand. Through the quality and economy of your line, imply the "solid" form."

I wanted to use this as an opportunity to take a 3D approach to learning about the anatomy and structure of the head that I've been exploring in my 2D illustrations. I also explored on creating really expressive/emotive characters. The
sculpture is made of one long continuous wire to mimic the effect of a continuous line drawing.

Bowl

"Carve or turn a wooden bowl. Develop a sensitive interplay between the shell and the void"

I wanted to turn something that felt modern and thin walls that would sit on top of my desk to hold keys and knick-knacks.

Tortoise & the Hare

"Design a pattern to be printed on cloth or paper for architectural application. Mechanically, such designs must repeat both vertically and horizontally. Exploit this repeat condition so that the recurring units all but lose their identity to the rhythm of the piece as a whole. The spaces between the printed units should function as fully as the units themselves"

I was inspired by MC Escher's geometric patterns and I wanted to see how I could use that technique to tell a story. I was also deeply inspired by African wax print patterns and I remember my grandma showing me one of hers with turtle prints in describing how certain fabric patterns had names. The fable of the tortoise and the hare felt very apt and I wanted to create a dynamic repeating unit illustrating the
two in motion, and in competition with each other. I constructed a frame from scrap wood to display the print.

Design Boy

"Make and refine a "layout" for a printed page (poster, billboard, book jacket etc.). Pay particular attention to the design of letter forms. Again, all elements should be compositionally related to one another and to the essential message of the piece."

I took this as an exploration of both character design and drawing dynamic figures, with inspiration from renowned comic book artist Jim Lee.

Sketchbook

"Make and refine a "layout" for a printed page (poster, billboard, book jacket etc.). Pay particular attention to the design of letter forms. Again, all elements should be compositionally related to one another and to the essential message of the piece."

I wanted to create a cohesive collage of illustrations that seemed subdued at first glance, but becomes more interesting and wacky the more you look at it.
